Heart health tips for Australians
· By Dr Sarah Chen, Consultant Cardiologist
Heart health is something we can all work on, no matter our age. Here are evidence-based tips that can help reduce your risk of heart disease.
Eat a heart-friendly diet A diet rich in vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, lean protein, and healthy fats (such as olive oil and nuts) is linked to better heart health. Try to limit highly processed foods, added salt, and sugary drinks. The Australian dietary guidelines are a good place to start.
Stay active Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week—for example, 30 minutes on most days. Walking, swimming, and cycling are all excellent. If you have a heart condition, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise programme.
Know your numbers Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar all matter for heart health. Your GP can check these and help you understand what they mean. If you have a family history of heart disease, a heart health check may be recommended.
When to see a cardiologist If you have chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, or dizziness, or if you have risk factors or a family history of heart disease, your GP may refer you to a cardiologist for assessment. Early detection and management can make a real difference.
