Echocardiography – Heart Ultrasound with a Cardiologist in Australia

Echocardiography is an ultrasound of the heart. It is painless, non-invasive, and gives your cardiologist detailed information about your heart structure and function. It is one of the most common tests we use to diagnose and monitor heart conditions.

Who it's for

Echocardiography is used for patients with symptoms such as breathlessness or chest pain, for those with a heart murmur or known valve disease, and for monitoring heart function in heart failure or after a heart attack. It is also used in preventive assessment when indicated.

What to expect

You will lie on your side while a small probe is moved over your chest. Gel is used for contact; there is no radiation. The test usually takes 20–40 minutes. You can eat and take your usual medications beforehand. Results are discussed with you, often on the same day.

When to see a cardiologist

Your GP or cardiologist may refer you for an echocardiogram if you have symptoms or signs suggesting a heart problem, or to monitor an existing condition. It is a standard part of many cardiology assessments.

Frequently asked questions

No. Echocardiography is painless. You may feel slight pressure from the probe. There is no radiation or needles involved.
