Stress Testing – Cardiac Exercise Assessment in Australia
Stress testing assesses how your heart performs under physical stress, usually while walking on a treadmill. It helps identify reduced blood flow to the heart (ischaemia) and can guide treatment and further tests. We offer exercise ECG and, where appropriate, stress echocardiography.
Who it's for
Stress testing is for patients with chest pain or breathlessness on exertion, those with risk factors for coronary artery disease, or for follow-up after treatment. It is also used in some cases to assess exercise capacity and rhythm during activity.
What to expect
You will walk on a treadmill while your heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored. The intensity increases gradually. You can stop at any time. The test usually takes around 15–30 minutes. You may be asked to avoid certain medications or food beforehand; we will give you clear instructions.
When to see a cardiologist
Your cardiologist or GP may recommend a stress test if you have symptoms suggestive of coronary artery disease, or to assess your heart’s response to exercise. It is a common, safe test when performed in a supervised setting.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Stress tests are performed under supervision with monitoring. Your cardiologist will ensure it is appropriate for you. Serious complications are rare.
